GONDIA

Gondia district was
formed on cuspicious Maharashtra Day, May 1, 1999. It is separated from
former Bhandara district. It now consists of following eight (8) tahsils.
Gondia, Tirora, Goregaon, Amgaon, Salekasa, Deori, Sadak-Arjuni and
Arjuni (Morgaon).
Nagpur division has six districts Gondia is one of them. Thus now
Vidharbha have eleven (11) districts including Gondia.
Gondia is present at Eastern end of Maharashtra State. Mumbai capital of
Maharashtra is 967 km and Nagpur sub-capital is only 165.5 km from here.

History
|
It is land of freedom
fighters and Sant-Mahatmas. In the year 1818, Chimanaji Patel of Kamptha
fought against British. Many people actively participate in freedom
struggles with many eminent personalities like Vinoba Bhave, Mahatma
Gandhi, Sundarlal Bahuguna and others.

How the Name Gondia
|
In ancient time, this
region was ruled over by 'Gond' kings. The rich dense forest reflects in
the culture of Gond people main business of that time was to collect lak
from 'Palas' tree and 'Gum' from 'Babul' tree, Gum is called as 'Gond'
in Hindi, hence the name. Evidence is gazetier written by R. V. Russel.
